I know what you might be thinking: this candidate highlights a quarter of his resume to his Consulting career and juxtaposes it with his DJing and Music career – how does that translate to good candidate ... for any role? Allow me to explain below!
My work in consulting at Crowe (the 9th largest professional services firm in the world) for the last five years has been focused on using massive amounts of data to tell stories to our clients and provide easy to read visuals for Executive leaders. I do this by leveraging my skills in Excel and Tableau, and now as I am learning Python and R through online courses, to use and manipulate data as evidence for our recommendations. The organizations we assess have complex structures and processes that our team must understand and navigate through efficiently, including qualitative factors, such as culture and bureaucracy, as well as quantitative factors, which include the financial impact of our recommendations, return on investment, overall costs, and many others. On top of that, I also project manage a team of consultants during engagements to ensure we track our budget and expenditures and maintain progress against our roadmap.
It is one thing to be knowledgeable and have information – it is a whole other skill to be able to present that information in an easy to understand fashion. As a professor once told me – “if you don’t have real data and can’t relay your information to your audience easily, you’re just another jerk with an opinion.” My consulting career has allowed me to build that skill, communicate better, and build relationships with our clients on a day-to-day basis.
DJ and Musician
I was born overseas but have lived in Texas for a majority of my life. I’ve learned how to hustle and grind for the things I love and have passion for, as a student who started DJing in college to help pay my tuition and housing and now as a Consultant for Crowe. I built a DJ career based on a financial need I had Freshman year at UT Austin and have grown that into a sustainable business with people I work with for contract gigs on the weekends. Through my own endeavors in music, I have first-hand knowledge of analytical platforms with Google Analytics, Google AdWords, YouTube Analytics, and analytics of social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) for advertising and brand building. I have invested my own money forward ($10,000 - $20,000) for these endeavors to learn and understand what these metrics mean and help grow my business. I even use Tableau to visualize and trend the success of my song, "The Champ is Here", which is nearing 1,000,000 streams on Spotify, to learn which markets the song is working for and how I can target those specific markets with my merchandise and tailor advertising for new music. I tell you all of this to show you the extra steps I have taken to learn and practice skills first hand and present examples of how passionate I am to learn the foundational principles of the music industry.
